I created lessons that incorporated discussions, technology, group work, individual work, etc. While developing this unit plan, I also learned the importance of creating diverse lessons in order to adhere to all of my students' various learning needs. I want students to recognize just how crucial the outcome that even one choice can have on a person, an environment, or even a society. The story is about a girl named Melinda who goes through a very traumatic experience right before she enters high school. Throughout this unit, I encourage students to look at the relationships between the choices we make and their overall outcomes. This unit is based off of the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. I also ask students to make connections with, not only the overall themes presented throughout the novel, but also the characters presented throughout Speak as well. With each lesson, I attempt to foster critical thinking within my students, and have them analyze and connect how each activity pertains to their own life. So, for this unit plan that I created on the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, I really tried to create lessons that would speak to my students. As a future educator, I need to make sure that all of my lessons help students make meaning and relevance throughout their lives because otherwise, students will probably fail to see the significant connections between literature and themselves.
